Here is a quote from Cisco concerning their testing philosophy:

<quote>
The Routing and Switching exam tests your ability to apply configuration
knowledge and skill to new situations; it is not a design test, nor is
it always a test of "best practices" for use in the field
</quote>

This means that you don't need to worry about any sort of "best
practice" solutions. Just do what the lab asks for and nothing more.
If you start thinking about what you would do in a real network to
answer a question, you are heading down the wrong road.

Subject: CAR

Hi guys n gals,

  I recently reviewed the IOS command reference
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios124/124cr/hq
os_r/qos_q1h.htm#wp1080850 and found something which I need
clarification. Under the rate-limit command there's this comment:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------
    Policing Traffic with CAR
  CAR embodies a rate-limiting feature for policing traffic. When
policing traffic with CAR, Cisco recommends the following values for the
normal and extended burst parameters:
  normal burst = configured rate * (1 byte)/(8 bits) * 1.5 seconds
  extended burst = 2 * normal burst
  With the listed choices for parameters, extensive test results have
shown CAR to achieve the configured rate. If the burst values are too
low, then the achieved rate is often much lower than the configured
rate.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------
  However I cannot find any similar recommendation with the police
command. Is this recommendation specifically targeting rate-limit
command? And should we follow Cisco's recommendation in the CCIE lab?

  Thank you all.
