It may not be exactely what you were looking for, but another idea would be
to configure 1 or more serials on your Linux-box for one of those
serial-daemons so you can reverse-telnet to it. That way you can use your
favorite SSH/Telnet application for a session to your loopback-IP and use it
as terminal-server as well for external machines... ;)
Too long ago since I last looked at setting that up, but go to deja.com and
search for "linux reverse telnet serial" or something like that. You should
find enough hits there when browsing a bit..
