Well we are pretty much all engineers here but this kind of thing is related
directly to business decisions. Trying to recoup costs where possible is
just part of the survival game in business these days. Margins get slimmer
so it has to be made up elsewhere. Of course there are insane ways to do
that as well, in a previous job no coffee water paper towels or anything
else was supplied. Even worse, we were told our per diem when training was
$30 when it was actually $35. Office supplied were locked up and the
finance Nazis policed everything to an extreme level...
Not defending or attacking the decision, just trying to point out the why.
I could see a decent case for making the electronic version free since no
printing or postage costs are involved....

"Cisco does not offer much free stuff anymore"
I disagree.
Networkers' is a perfect example.
And I don't mean the vendor crap thrown into the crowds or wireless access.
(though some of the t-shirts, gizmos, and gadgets are quite nice at times)
I am referring specifically to the year of access after_the_event.
It is more information than most humans can absorb there (and have a life at
the same time)
And it is free.
If you want free stuff just start calling vendors and asking for it!
Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll send you a nice switch or something! :)
(Translation: I KNOW there are a few vendors who will "give away" devices
and
lose money, just to compete - to know that Cisco did not get the sale)
That said, I did not mean to infer that it was wrong for Cisco to decide to
charge for Packet, but on the other hand you have different fingers and a
debate could be made that at a certain level Cisco-certified individuals, or
perhaps even those organizations that pay the big bucks for services such as
Smartnet, receive some printed copies @ N/C for their staff.
My $.02

That not fair we spend thousands on training and then we push Cisco Products
to our customers. I think we should look at Nortel or some other vendors.
Cisco does not offer much free stuff anymore

Did anyone see this? Packet is no longer free for the printed edition...it
now costs money.
I received my renewal notice today and it is no longer free, I checked their
web site to verify.
Interesting...
