John,
I have been through the labs quite a few times, and what I would
recommend would be to read through the lab to make sure what you do does
not break a future challenge and then do the one that fits for you...
Write it down, and when you come back to it on testing, see if another
way presents itself that will not break your current setup... If you
have two ways.. go up and ask.. "I have two solutions to do this xxx
question(describe the ways without using config commands to the proctor)
and ask if they prefer one over the other... You may get: "as long as
the output matches the question"
or a "go with X way (they are clarifying the question without giving you
specific IOS commands)".
