virtual-link is an interface in area 0. you do not
need any other interface in area 0 to bring up
virtual-link. you need virtual-link only if the router
is an abr, hence requires a interface in area 0--the
virtual-link.
only a cisco implementation of ospf requires abr to
touch area 0. the rfc does not require it. hence you
can pop loopbacks on each abr to make them an area 0
interface.
