No, not needed. Virtual link IS area 0. So that's your part right there.
Just remember to have a transit area to connect things together properly!

Is it necessary to have one interface defined in area0 before a virtual link
will come up? I've seen some scenarios providing solutions that do not
include interfaces or loopbacks in area0, however VL's are configured. The
only way I have been able to get this to work is to have at least one
interface in area0. Thoughts appreciated.
