I agree that there may be some "hacks" you could use to get this to work but
you still have the limitation of how HSRP pairs will "see" each other.
Since there is no way to really configure the peer, they have to be able to
find each other somewhat transparently. Plus, they still have to be in the
same logical L3 subnet so I don't see how you can really get around this in
any straight-forward manner. I've been wrong before though... ;-)
