I'm thinking it's just a bug or a buffer overflow in the console/telnet
connection that left off the extra characters. The 'sh ver' says 24 FE
ports. Try doing a 'sh run int e0/17'. I'm betting it'll fail, but a
'sh run int fa0/17' will work. Or a show interface. That is a pretty
old IOS (not too long after the 2950s came out, so an upgrade might not
be a bad idea anyway...

George, did you try an IOS upgrade? Maybe it's just a bug. Otherwise I
would suspect a hardware failure is keeping the IOS from detecting the
interface correctly.

Hello,
We have a 2950 switch, all ports should be FastEthernet. But F0/17 is
just a
Ethernet port, not FastEthernet port. Anyone saw this before?
