The telecommunications company have been laying people off for years. But
the technologies covered in the "Service Provider" track are not just for
phone company networks. Service Providers come at many levels of ISP,
including some large enterprises that have their own MPLS core. But
InterDomain networking (Multicast/MSDP, MPLS, MPLS-VPN) is useful within
many different areas of the world we live in.
I was simply disputing the previous post where someone asked "Why
bother?"... There is money to be made out there, because these types of
networks are typically very complex, and need people with a good
understanding of how they work in order to design and/or manage the network.
Just ask yourself what you WANT to do, and you'll find a way to make that
happen!
HTH,
Scott

I would hope though, that those being laid off are not the necessary talent
needed to keep things running. Or, on the flip side, there's nothing wrong
with consulting in gigs that deal in those kinds of issues.
And "service provider" is WAY beyond the stereotypical telco structure from
years gone by.
There's plenty of work to be had.

Why bother? Service providers are still laying people off since the dot-bomb
and World-con days...
