James,
I'm curious which native mode image you're using? We just upgraded a
pair of 6500s to sup720s/native mode running what I thought was the
latest enterprise feature set and its only ~48MB. Here's what we're
using:
12.2.18-SXD6
ENT FW W/MPLS/IPV6/SSH/3DES
s72033-jk9o3sv-mz.122-18.SXD6.bin

You dont have much of a choice with Native Mode on a Sup720. The
image
sizes are now ~75 MB and the internal flash is only 64MB.

The 6500s do not require either PCMCIA flash (in the case of a
sup1
or sup2) or compact flash (in the case of a sup720 or sup32) to
operate. Its more of a convenience feature for storing IOS
images,
configuration files, or crash dumps. It is possible to configure
a
boot statement that would force the switch to load its image off
of a
flash card but I wouldn't do that in production in case some
removes
the flash card.
