The 6500s do not require either PCMCIA flash (in the case of a sup1 or sup2)
or compact flash (in the case of a sup720 or sup32) to operate. Its more of
a convenience feature for storing IOS images, configuration files, or crash
dumps. It is possible to configure a boot statement that would force the
switch to load its image off of a flash card but I wouldn't do that in
production in case some removes the flash card.
