Hey all,
I found this link while looking for something else. Pretty good
comparison between Native and Hybrid. It's a lot to read, but the best
one I've seen so far.

That is now supported in Hybrid with 12.2(18)SXF and CatOS 8.5(1).

I agree. Native is nice, with only 1 config file to manage,
it'll make
life simpler. But there are reasons to keep it hybrid. I don't
think
native supports VTP v3 yet, which is needed to use VTP with
VLANs
1025-4096. There are other ones as well. But on the flip side,
you
need native to support the OSM modules. At least you did.
Native tends
to have more of the newer features, like NSF/SSO, etc. Read the
docs,
there are many, many things to consider...

I have converted couple of 6500 cat from hybrid to native.
It is not very troublesome , yeah it took around an hour when I
did it
first
time.
But then it was fairly easy second time.

mode.
The link below gives a good comparision between hybrid and
native

I think cisco website , also had a option when we can put in
our CAT OS
config and it gets converted to IOS.
Thanks

You guys must have read the old Cisco doc that took several
pages to
hold
all the steps for the "old way". This was the first doc I used
for my
first
conversion. However, a coworker who had the benefit of taking a
Global
Knowledge class had the process condensed down to 4 or 5 steps
and the
last
one we did took all of fifteen minutes. ;-0
I realize the talk about the lack of an MSFC and all and also he
doesn't
have nearly enough RAM or flash so that conversation is moot I
think. I
just wanted to mention that I bet I could upgrade 30 6500's in a
day.

No MSF= no Native IOS. Also bear in mind that the coversion
process is
fairly involved. From memory doing it remotely can be scary you
certainly
need out of band console.

that should I
upgrade to
Cat OS or IOS ? We have approximately 30 plus
6500 series Catalyst

over
US.
Currently the Cat OS version installed in these
switches are 7.4(7)
or
7.6(7).
We are planning to upgrade the operating system
of the switch.
I want to know if I should upgrade with the
latest version of the
Cat OS
or
upgrade with the latest IOS of 6500 series
switch.
I have heard that Cisco is encouraging people to
go with the IOS for
6500
series switch rather then Cat OS.
Will the New IOS for 6500 series switch support
all my latest
hardware
like
SUP1A-2GE , line card with PoE, Communication
Module, etc.
Is the IOS as stable as that of Cat OS and does
it support all the
functionality which are supported by the Cat OS
like QoS, IP
TELEHONY etc.
I would also like to know which version of IOS /
Cat OS I should
upgrade
to.
NOTE: We have 16 MB Flash & 64 MB RAM in all our
Switches.
