distribute-list out vs. in

Hi group,
I'm labbing up some of my doubted knowledge about distribute-list in/out using when there are redistribution b/t protocols.
Here is my acl:
access-list 20 deny 150.1.1.1
access-list 20 permit any
I have OSPF and RIP mutual redistribute. Under RIP if I use "distribute-list 20 out ospf 1" vs. "distribute-list 20 in", they give me same result.
So here is my question: does the "distribute-list 20 out ospf 1" mean deny route 150.1.1.1 OUT FROM OSPF entering into RIP? and does it also equipvalent to "distribute-list 20 in" which mean deny 150.1.1. into RIP?
Which method is more preferable?
Thanks in advance,
Dustin
