RE: mls QoS question

Jeff,

Assume for a moment you never heard of flow control and you start working on
a 3550 with its out-of-the-box factory default settings.

If you configure any QoS on the 3550 correctly, it will work.

Now, let's assume you're a hotshot network consultant who's just been hired
to implement QoS for company xyz. You find out your client's requirements,
you design the QoS implementation to meet those requirements and then you
start implementing the needed config's on your client's equipment including
an in-production 3550.

In this scenario, flow control could be an issue because this 3550 is not in
factory default condition. Someone before you may have implemented flow
control on 1 or more of the interfaces.

I don't know what would happen if flow control happened to be configured on
some interfaces and then I implemented QoS, but I wouldn't want to be the
consultant who finds what happens under those circumstances.

Tim, can you clarify when you say flow control isn't an issue?

Thanks dude,
Jeff

Jeff,

By default, flow control isn't an issue when it comes to QoS. However,
in
the lab, you should ALWAYS double check to see whether non-default
settings
have been pre-configured.

Remember part of the challenge of passing the lab is being able to
troubleshoot problems while under time pressure. So, don't assume any
setting is at its default.

Subject: mls QoS question

All, when enabling QoS on the 3550, I always get the following:

Rack1SW2(config)#mls qos
QoS: ensure flow-control on all interfaces are OFF for proper operation.

Does anyone go under the interfaces in question and disable flow control
as standard?

Thanks,
Jeff
