What if the requirement is to interconnect X number of GigE links and statically route between them?
I would imagine it could be done with a router as well but L3 switch is a first solution which comes
to mind. Though configuring Y number of VLANs and SVIs is a bit odd when You could just have subifs on a router...
Cheers

Tim,
Ethernet sub-interfaces are for trunking, and to allow traffic from more
than 1 vlan down to the router.
What would be the purpose of having sub interfaces on the switch?

Lee.

Hey guys,
Can a sub-interface, for example, fa0/1.1, be created on a switchport?
I've never tried it but I can't see why that wouldn't be possible.
I'd test it myself if I had a 3550 handy but I don't.
TIA, Tim

Dave,
I have found that if you are in interface config mode then back out to
global config mode then enter int fa1/0.x, this should work out for you.

Subject: Creating a sub-interface on a Fa1/0 port
I am working on a lab and having a problem creating a subinterface in a
router (it won't let me enter "int fa1/0.1", for some reason). This allows
it on other routers. In order to create a trunk. Is there certain router
specifics that would prevent this. I am starting from a clean router.
Thanks for any help.
Dave
