RE: Creating a sub-interface on a Fa1/0 port

I recently tried to do the same on Cat3750G-48 and switch was barking on me with something like
"encapsulation dot1q must be configured under main interface"...(it's been a while ago so I don't
remember the exact wording). But there was no "encapsulation" option under main interface - I ended up
with several VLANs and SVIs instead.

Alex

Hi Tim

Looks like you can:

Cat1(config)#interface fastEthernet 0/20.1
Cat1(config-subif)#?
Interface configuration commands:
arp Set arp type (arpa, probe, snap) or timeout
  bandwidth Set bandwidth informational parameter
  cdp CDP interface subcommands
default Set a command to its defaults
  delay Specify interface throughput delay
  description Interface specific description
exit Exit from interface configuration mode
ip Interface Internet Protocol config commands
no Negate a command or set its defaults
  priority-queue Configure priority scheduling
  service-policy Configure QoS Service Policy
  shutdown Shutdown the selected interface
timeout Define timeout values for this interface
wrr-queue Configure weighted round-robin xmt queues

Cat1(config-subif)#

Done on a 3550. This might just be cosmetic, we all know how some of the
developers like leaving stuff in just cos it's there.

Hey guys,

Can a sub-interface, for example, fa0/1.1, be created on a switchport?

I've never tried it but I can't see why that wouldn't be possible.

I'd test it myself if I had a 3550 handy but I don't.

TIA, Tim

Dave,

I have found that if you are in interface config mode then back out to
global config mode then enter int fa1/0.x, this should work out for
you.

I am working on a lab and having a problem creating a subinterface in a
router (it won't let me enter "int fa1/0.1", for some reason). This
allows
it on other routers. In order to create a trunk. Is there certain
router
specifics that would prevent this. I am starting from a clean router.
Thanks for any help.

Dave
