the term 'socket' is usually used for the combination of an ip and
port ,e.g it is used to uniquely identify applications, like in
network programming you can have multiple sockets on a single port
(e.g FTP), a socket is more of a 'software object' provided by the TCP
implementation
and yes BGP uses TCP Port 179
