Hi Leigh,

Yes, I actually implemented the BGP backdoor in a customer solution where
they had multiple sites connected by both Frame-relay and Satellite. Over
frame (the primary connection), they ran EIGRP. Over satellite, they went
through an ISP, which supplied the customer a BGP confederation with each
site using a different AS.

With EIGRP being the primary routing protocol, it was necessary to use the
backdoor command since the AD of internal EIGRP is higher than eBGP's AD.
This way, the HQ had 2 different paths to the remotes - 1 via EIGRP on the
frame, 1 via BGP and satellite. If the frame went down, HQ had the BGP
prefix ready to go. Was there other ways to do the same thing? Yes, but
this is what was implemented with success.

This is a very simplistic explanation but I hope explains the use of the
backdoor command.

I know when I first read about the command, I too was stumped by it's use.
Never thought I'd use it in a real-life scenario. HTH,
Sean
