I have been told (and believe) that this requirement is IOS dependent.
In earlier IOS versions - you needed encap ppp as well as the
authentication command (if used) on the physical interface as well.
This requirement has been lifted when you are working in the 12.x IOS.
I have also been told (and believe) that you can still put the
commands on the physical if you want to with no point loss. In fact,
many consider this a best practice config since it will be "backwards
compatible" to earlier IOS versions.
The only knock on doing this I suppose is that it is "extra
configuration" and you want to try and minimize how much of that you
do.
Hey - at least it is not as bad as the dreaded and ridiculous - no arp
frame-realy!!!!
