Hi guys,
When I first learned how to configure isdn and dialer profiles, I was told,
among other things, that except for encap ppp layer 3 info should be
configured on the dialer interface and physical layer info on the bri
interface. As I recall, the explanation for why encap ppp was needed on the
bri interface as well as the dialer interface was because without it, the
initial ppp negotiations couldn't take place.
I have subsequently learned that encap ppp doesn't always need to be
configured on the bri interface. But, what I still don't know and, so far,
haven't been able to find out is why this is and under what circumstances
this is true.
Actually, I once did get an explanation but either it didn't register or I
didn't fully understand it. So, I'm trying again.
I have one last question related to this.
If encap ppp isn't needed on the bri interface but I've configured it just
the same, is that a mis-configuration that will cause problems or just an
unnecessary command?
In all the isdn config's I've done, I can't remember any time where having
encap ppp on the bri interface caused problems but that could be because I
was never able to identify and verify encap ppp as the actual cause of the
problem.
Any explanation that can be provided will be greatly appreciated.
TIA, Tim
