I used some spare 1720's and 1760's for routers in my home lab. With
the correct amount of RAM and Flash, I could do everything but ISIS,
(which the 1700's don't support). For the ATM stuff, I just used a
point-to-point serial link and rented some time on an Internet rack to
practice ATM. The most expensive part for me was the 3550's. Now that
they're EoS, you may be able to get some cheap on Ebay. I know it's
expensive, but there's no way I could have passed the lab without it.
You HAVE to be able to mock up things you don't understand and play with
it. Not to mention the speed you pick up from spending lots of time
working on the command line.
