I didn't really understand the idea behind virtual networks either after
having read the Doc-CD several times. But, after reading the new book on
Mobile IP, I now understand it perfectly.
It's actually not a difficult concept.
Suppose your network provide connectivity for devices like laptops, pda's,
ip cell phones that never actually physically connect to your network.
Since these devices never physically connect to your network, there's really
no reason to allocate a physical interface for these devices just so you can
assign ip subnet.
So, instead of allocating a physical interface and assigning an ip subnet to
this interface, what you do instead is create a virtual network. From this
virtual network, you allocate ip addresses to all these devices.
Now, when these devices are away from their home network which is all the
time, pkts sent to these devices will go to the HA router. From there, the
HA will create a tunnel to the FA when these device actually attach to the
network.
For pkts to these MN to get to the HA in the first place, keep in mind, that
this virtual network must be know throughout the entire network. This means
that this virtual network must be included in the routing process.
In the Mobile IP book, they talk about redist this network into the IGP, but
I suspect that if you configure your IGP to cover this virtual network, that
might also work. But, on this last point, I'm not sure.

what is the virtual network? is it an arbitrary address assigned for the
tunneling of the traffic from the HA to the FA? i think it's safe to assume
that is is not the home network or the network associated with the FA......
