Aji,

This is my understanding, however I am not sure it is absolutely correct.

1. If you create the following string
snmp-server host 192.168.0.1 CISCO

then all traps will be sent to the snmp server with the the community string
of CISCO. However No traps will be sent to the server as the command to
enable them has not been entered.

2. If you now enter the following
snmp-server enable traps

Then the following will be sent to the snmp-server as traps

snmp-server enable traps snmp authentication linkdown linkup coldstart
warmstart
snmp-server enable traps tty
snmp-server enable traps casa
snmp-server enable traps isdn call-information
snmp-server enable traps isdn layer2
snmp-server enable traps isdn chan-not-avail
snmp-server enable traps isdn ietf
snmp-server enable traps hsrp
snmp-server enable traps config
snmp-server enable traps entity
snmp-server enable traps envmon
snmp-server enable traps ds0-busyout
snmp-server enable traps ds1-loopback
snmp-server enable traps bgp
snmp-server enable traps pim neighbor-change rp-mapping-change
invalid-pim-message
snmp-server enable traps ipmulticast
snmp-server enable traps msdp
snmp-server enable traps rsvp
snmp-server enable traps frame-relay
snmp-server enable traps frame-relay subif
snmp-server enable traps syslog
snmp-server enable traps rtr
snmp-server enable traps dlsw
snmp-server enable traps pppoe
snmp-server enable traps atm subif
snmp-server enable traps dial
snmp-server enable traps dsp card-status
snmp-server enable traps ipmobile
snmp-server enable traps director server-up server-down
snmp-server enable traps voice poor-qov
snmp-server enable traps dnis
snmp-server enable traps xgcp

3. Now if you wish to limit the traps that are sent to the snmp server then
you can create a subset of traps that are sent. This is done by modifying
the snmp-server host command as follows:

snmp-server host 192.168.0.1 CISCO hsrp

Now only hsrp traps are sent to the management station.

Lastly I believe there are a couple of traps that you cannot stop by this
method and have to disable on the interface - link status being one. On the
interface you would have to enter the following command

Rack1R5(config-if)#no snmp trap link-status

HTH

I asked the same question with no success. So I think you need snmp enable
traps vtp like commands in the global mode. This command enable the
function of sending the traps to all hosts

Hi All,

Does SNMP send the traps by default ie after
having snmp enabled with the any of the snmp-server
commands.
how did these two commands differ ?

1.snmp-server host host-id [traps | informs]
2.snmp-server enable traps

Thanks

Aji...
