OSPF host vs Network

Folks,

I have recently seen some configlets that had host wildcard for ospf network
statements instead of network, is that my misunderstanding or a new trend?

for example
router ospf 1
net 172.16.1.0 0.0.0.255 area 0

they had

net 172.16.1.1 0.0.0.0 area 0
