Actually, using the police command in MQC can be much, much more complicated
than your question indicates.

This command seems to have more variations and options than there are colors
in the rainbow.

Another challenge with this command is that the documentation is confusing
and incomplete - it doesn't, IMHO, enlighten you that well on when and why
to use each of the options.

My first suggestion would be to read about the basics of this command in the
Odom book, DQoS.

Then, I would study the new features added to this command under the 12.3
documentation.

Then, I would set aside many hours to experiment and get used to all the
variations of the command on some routers by using the "?" on-line help in
IOS and lots of show commands.

Unfortunately for you, there's no direct answer to your questions - the
answer regarding bc & be, as usual, is it depends. If you leave off those
parameters, will you be OK with the defaults used by IOS?

I suppose that depends on what the defaults are, doesn't it?

Hmmm, let's see what the defaults are in the documentation.

Oh, there not there !!

Yikes !! Now what do I do?

Hmmm, maybe if configure the command in different ways and then do use some
show commands after each configuration, I can figure this thing out.

Pondering the output of this show command, you think, "Damn it, what does
all this crap mean?"

Well, let's see what the documentation has to say about the output of these
show commands.

Hmmm, now that makes sense. NOT !!!

OK, how about if I do a search on all of Cisco?

3 hours later, you're thinking, "There's got to be a better way. This hasn't
been very productive and now I'm tired, frustrated and I still know that I
don't fully understand this."

OK, let me try GS again.

After waiting patiently for what seems like an eternity, you see a response
from one of the guru's.

Excitedly, you quickly open the response and read it. Then, you read it
again. And, then once more.

After thinking about this response, the light bulb goes on. But, now,
you've got 3 more questions.

So, so it goes.

Welcome to the masochistic world of ccie wannabe's.

In a week or so, let me know if you think I'm exaggerating.

However, on a more optimistic note, if you keep at it and refuse to give up,
slowly, things do become more clear. And, as frustrating as it might be,
you begin to accept that some things will remain unclear but aren't worth
the time and effort required to fully understand.

HTH, Tim

Subject: police...with also optionals bc - be?

Hi all,

I am not sure if this question has been asked already...I have done a search
but couldn4t fine anything.

Anyway, let4s get to the point: Imagine you are asked to police some sort of
traffic. You do your class-maps and when you do your police-map and use the
previous map then you want to "police" it. The question is: Do you just do
police or do you also include bc and be? Also, how do you find the
appropiate TC for a link? I know it is between 10 and 125...but how do I
find out the value if it is not given?

Thanks a lot to everyone. Regards,

Fer
