thanks to Paresh for a quick response :)

instead of "red con sub", I entered the routes as networks - now the abr is summarizing correctly

     100.0.0.0/8 is variably subnetted, 3 subnets, 2 masks
O 100.10.2.1/32 [110/65] via 172.16.1.1, 00:00:46, Serial0/0.3
O 100.10.1.1/32 [110/65] via 172.16.1.1, 00:00:46, Serial0/0.3
O 100.10.0.0/16 is a summary, 00:00:46, Null0
