Hi Will,
I have the setup you are talking about, it worked for me but I really
wouldn't recommend it. It's a real pain in the *ss if you are following a
workbook.
I used a 1712 router as the "router" part for the second catalyst, using a
trunk between the 2950 and the router, but if you add the cost of the router
to the 2950, you'll come close to a 3550.
Beware also that some of the 2950's are SI (standard image), even offering
less Layer 2 possibilities. The cheapest EI 2950 is the 2950T-24, which
comes new for $1000 if I'm not mistaken.
If I were to do it all over again, I would have squeezed the extra money out
of my dry pockets and get the second 3550. I'm not sure, but I guess cisco
wouldn't mind you putting an EMI image on an SMI(cheaper) for study purposes
only. After all, when you get to CCIE you'll want to recommend Cisco gear
and that'll be good for Cisco ;-)
Yes, it is possible to do it this way, but not the easiest way. The only
good point is that you'll learn to improvise a lot !
HTH,
Koen.

Subject: Add a 2950 instead of another 3550?
Has anyone used a 2950 together with a 3550 for lab study ?
I need to add another switch to my existing 3550-emi, and for cost reasons
am toying with the idea of using a 2950. Of course, I understand the 2950
doesnt "do" L3, but then I am looking to do the L3 requirements on my
existing 3550.
Can anyone provide any major reasons why I should use 2x 3550s instead of a
2950 and a 3550? (ie. vtp/stp/trunks/vlans etc. I can all do using this
combination whilst retaining the 3550 for L3 specific tasks).
Will this combination cause me problems with any of the workbooks that are
out there? (ie. are they geared for 2x 3550s only)
cheers
will
