Add a 2950 instead of another 3550?

Has anyone used a 2950 together with a 3550 for lab study ?

I need to add another switch to my existing 3550-emi, and for cost reasons am toying with the idea of using a 2950. Of course, I understand the 2950 doesnt "do" L3, but then I am looking to do the L3 requirements on my existing 3550.

Can anyone provide any major reasons why I should use 2x 3550s instead of a 2950 and a 3550? (ie. vtp/stp/trunks/vlans etc. I can all do using this combination whilst retaining the 3550 for L3 specific tasks).

Will this combination cause me problems with any of the workbooks that are out there? (ie. are they geared for 2x 3550s only)
