I'm not positive, but I think its because you have mapped the IP, but
don't have a destination for it to send to. Removing the mapping allows
it to learn the mapping dynamically.
The router is seeing the packet come in, and knows the IP to respond to.
It looks up the layer 2 address, which you have statically defined, and
realizes that it doesn't have a destination ( no # ) to send to.
By not having the dialer map on R4, it can learn the address dynamically.
If you do a debug on R4 for icmp packets, I bet your getting
"encapsulation failed" messages when the mapping is in place.
Thats my thoughts from how I understand dialer maps and dialer
interfaces. Perhaps someone can correct me.
