I have recently Lab'ed this using Windows XP, Cisco ACS Radius and a 3550 switch. It does actually work --- eventually! You do need to use the global command "dot1x system-auth-control" on later versions of 3550 IOS for it to work though.

Windows XP supports 802.1x if that helps.

There may be 802.1x clients for *nix versions out there too.
