RE: MPLS-vrf limitation

The figures quoted are based on the following maximum number of vrf routes
(all vrfs):

3745 - 20,000
3725 - 20,000
3660 - 20,000
3640 - <don't have the figure>
3620 - < " >
3750 metro - 8,000

(the above route limits and the previously mentioned practical vrf limits
are from Cisco - I don't have the 7xxx numbers to hand).

Each VRF consumes: 1 IP control block (33,184 byes), 1 network descriptor
block (ndb) per route (64 bytes), and 1 routing descriptor block (rdb) per
path (144 bytes).
You should budget about 60-70k bytes per vrf (vrf control block, cef, lfib,
idbs [4692 bytes per hardware idb & 2576 bytes per software idb], etc), and
about 800-900 bytes per route (cef, lfib, rib in bgp). It's a very good idea
to provision 256mb on PE boxes, if at all possilbe. And don't forget the
memory consumed by IOS, routing protocols (eg. about 168k per OSPF process +
required ospf database req.s), and any Internet routes.

Also, watch out for cpu utilization - if you are using static routing for
vrfs then you can obviously get away with a greater number of vrfs than if
you are using ebgp/rip/eigrp/ospf.

  Hi Mark,

I would like to know the real world guidelines you mentioned are
calculated on what basis ?

Is it a CPU limitation, routing-table size limitation or what ?

Some VRFs can have as few as 100 routes, where as other VRFs can have much
more.

Also do you have some real world figures for the 7xxx series routers.

  Regards,
  Yasser

Here are some rough real world guidelines for some MPLS edge platforms:

    3745 - 15 vrfs
    3725 - 15 vrfs
    3660 - 15 vrfs
    3640 - 5 vrfs
    3620 - 5 vrfs
    3750 metro - 26 vrfs

You can use the 'show idb' command.
