Hi Group,
I got a real life Voice scenario mentioned below and appreciate any feed
back on this.
We have a LAN with 80 odd IP phones (7960s) sitting on 1 voice Vlan and have
a voice recorder at site. And with the help of Span & Rspan we normally
carry out the required voice recording task.
I am trying to make this process of voice recording little bit more
efficient.
And what I mean by that is , I am thinking on the lines of putting each
phone/port on it's own vlan and they can not talk directly. Instead they had
to traverse via the trunk ports to the core 3550s switches. The biggest plus
to me in this design is that I can have * one point * with in the Network
where I can pick up the required voice recordings. And also because each
phone will be in it's own vlan , we ONLY have to modify the metrics of a
vlan which we want recordings to be taken. That makes this operation little
more efficient.
Some may argue that it is bit of an inefficient way for traffic flow , but
again since all the calls go to the gateway any way and the bandwidth is
only 80k.
Let me elaborate this in an example so that it may be bit clearer.
Phone 1 (vlan 10) & Phone 2 (vlan 11) are connected to First Access layer
3550 >>>> connected to first core 3550 on L3 trunk (vlan 90)on port 24.
Phone 3 (vlan 12) & Phone 4 (vlan 13) are connected to Second Access layer
3550 >>> connected to the second 3550 on L3 trunk (vlan 91) on port 24.
And core 3550s are conncted via L3.
And vlans 90 & 91 are spanned to the voice recorders.
And what I need is , phone 1 , 2 are not talking directly to each other
instaed they have to traverse across to vlan 90 in the core. And the same
goes for phones 3 & 4 which has to go via vlan 91 iun the core. So in all
practical terms , I will can hop on the vlan 90 & 91 when ever I need to
pick up voice recordings of let us say for phone 1 .
So the summary is , I guess with the help of * community or private * vlans
on Access layer switches , I can make each phone to be on her own vlan and
make not speaking directly to her neighboring phone.
But I am not sure on how to force the traffic from each access layer traffic
to traverse across to the Core layer vlans ( in my example vlan 90 & 91).
May be I should be able to do it on similar concept as PBR's next hop
concept with in vlans ??
And that is what I am wondering on how to modify the vlan metrics to force
the traffic from multiple vlans from Access layer to a specific vlan trunk
on core switches ?
Any feed back is much appreciated :-)
Thanks in advance..
David.
