Hi,

Yes you have 18 months from the time you took the written to
attempt the lab. There is also a 3 yr limit after which
time you would have to retake the written. You can retake
the lab multiple times until you run out of funds or your
written expires :)

As to whether to take the exam or retake the written -
really depends on how prepared yu think you are. Since you
are funding it yourself, $ is a big issue. Taking the exam
is a good preparation even if you don't pass. Retaking the
written is sort of a step backward. I would probably study
really hard between now and then and take the lab.
