Well, I am right there with Brant, as long as you can be sure, that routers
do not do inter VLAN bridging, you should configure router ports as portfast
for all STP modes. If you read the explanation in the tech note referenced
it talks about creating STP loop. In many today networks routers do not
bridge, and for such networks the recommendation is irrelevant. In my
opinion not enabling portfast on a router connected port represents an
exceptional situation if you will, and as such I would look for a good
reason not to do it.

Best Regards,
Alexei

Hi Brant,

Well... I would think its not required too (if the router is not
configured to bridge, etc..), but Cisco's doc recommended it (just
do a search for router any you'll hit the NOTE) :-

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps700/products_tech_note0918
6a00800b1500.shtml

In fact, even IE's workbook Lab 1 task 1.7 recommended not turning on
portfast for ports connected to routers.

Of course this is not a DO-IT OR DIE/FAIL kinda situation but I just
want to hear some of your views on this.

Thanks.
