Just as you say, virtual templates provide a base configuration. They are
very useful when configuring L2TP/PPTP/L2F.
A compulsory tunnel mode L2TP tunnel from an access platform such as a NAS
or DSLAM (called the L2TP Acccess Concentrator [LAC]) to a tunnel headend
gateway (called an L2TP Network Server [LNS]) can carry multiple PPP
connections from remote access clients.
In this case, a single virtual template can be configured on the LNS, and as
the PPP connections from the remote access clients are terminated on the LNS
(the PPP connection is from a remote access client to the LNS [over the L2TP
tunnel from the LAC to LNS]), the configuration from the virtual template is
automatically cloned (copied) to virtual access interfaces (one per PPP
connection) that are created on-the-fly. So, instead of having to manually
configure one virtual interface per PPP connection, you only need to
configure a single virtual template interface.
If you really want to see this in action, you might like to configure a
basic L2TP compulsory tunnel mode setup such as:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk801/tk703/technologies_configuration_examp
le09186a0080093c2a.shtml
...and then use the 'debug vtemplate' command to see the automatic cloning
of virtual access interfaces on-the-fly as the PPP connections from the
remote boxes are terminated on the LNS (assuming dial in).
HTH.
