Malcolm,

You are absolutely right if by section you mean those group of tasks that
are given are point assignment. It's a bit confusing because the score
typically shows 8 to 10 sections, for example,

Bridging & Switching
IGP
EGP
Multicast
voip
IP Services
Network Management
etc.

Now, within each of the above the sections it's not all or nothing. For
example, assume IGP is 25 points. Within IGP, you could possibly have 15
points assigned to ospf tasks, 4 points assigned to Eigrp, 2 points assigned
to RIP and 4 points assigned to Redistribution.

And, within OSPF, you could possibly have 4 groups of tasks where each group
has individually assigned points. Within a group of tasks that are assigned
points, it's all or nothing. So, for example, let's say the first group of
tasks in the ospf section is assigned 4 points.

In that 1st group of tasks you're instructed to a) place all frame relay
interfaces in area 0 using only physical interfaces, b) where possible
include the loopback interfaces in area 0 but don't use the network command
to do so c) put vlan 5 in area 5 but don't allow type 5 LSA's to enter area
5 d) configure strong authentication in such a way that no rogue routers can
introduce bad routes into your backbone.

If you do all those things except you forgot to redist one loopback address
into area 0 on one router, you will lose all 4 points assigned to this
groups of tasks.

But, even though you lost all 4 points for this group of tasks, it's
possible that you could get the rest of the points assigned to ospf and the
rest of the points assigned to the IGP section for a total of 21 points.

Now let's say you're doing the BGP section and you need to configure a ibgp
peering relationship between 2 routers such that if a router's connection to
the F/R cloud goes down, the ibgp peering relationship remains intact. To
complete this task you need to use the loopback interface that you had
previously forgotten to redistribute into ospf. Let's also assume that you
configure BGP 100% correctly, but because of that forgotten loopback your
ibgp peering doesn't work and you never figure out and correct the problem.
The result is that you'll lose all the points for that group of BGP tasks.

HTH, Tim

When I sat my lab back in Oct. 2002, I heard stories that you need to get a
100% of all the marks in a section for the marks to count at all. I.e. if
you get 95% of the marks then that equals a fail in that section. Or, say
there are 10 sections, you need 100% in 8 sections. If you loose marks in a
section then you loose all the marks for that section. I can vaguely
remember talking to the proctor afterwards who also hinted that, that was
the case. I'm not sure if it's changed since.

The lab has a total of 100 points. You need 80 points to pass. The number
of sections can vary from one lab to another. And, the number of points
assigned to any section will also vary. For example, on one lab BGP might
be worth 8 points and on different lab BGP will be worth 16 points.

One thing to keep in mind is that many tasks in the lab are results
oriented. So, for example, if your layer 2 tasks aren't completed
correctly, it's quite likely you'll lose points in the IGP and BGP sections,
even if those things are configure correctly.
