Somewhere in the definition of "CCIE" is the word EXPERT. I suspect
Cisco wants their experts to know the latest stuff so no time mastering
new (and old) technologies will be wasted.

I know several CCIEs (numbers ranging from the mid-1000's to the
12000's). All both know their stuff and know where to find what they
need (yes, both statements can be true at the same time). They also
understand the way things work. I know several people who don't have
their numbers that are just as good.

If your only growing your knowledge to pass the exam, well, that's your
business. The problem is you risk the respect of your peers and customers.

If you learn the core topics and can work through the others, you should
be fine.
