The Cache server sets up a connection to the router,
with a heartbeat for WCCP.
The location of the cache server with respect to the
router has nothing to do with the in/out configuration
of WCCP on the router.
The in/out is per interface and is for the direction
of the traffic. If you have a router with an inside
interface of eth0 and an outside interface of eth1,
with hosts on eth0:
You could redirect 'in' on eth0
or
You could redirect 'out' on eth1
Traffic from the hosts would be passing through the
router 'in eth0' and 'out eth1'. It is recommended to
redirect in, so that the router doesn't have to
process the traffic twice.
In the scenario where you have a single ethernet, are
you using subinterfaces for the connection between the
router and the switch? If so, WCCP can be configured
on a subinterface:
interface Ethernet0/0.1
encapsulation dot1Q 1 native
ip wccp web-cache redirect in
Is the switch a 3550? If so, you can configure WCCP
inbound on the ports where the hosts are attached.
