Hi Justin,

Did you mean 3750 series?

It is because 3550 is a layer-3 switch, where it performs critical tasks such
as routing and packet filtering in hardware ASIC, with needed information stored
in a TCAM. This restricts a number of features and memory capacity by being a
budgetory layer3 switch, but in return gives you a very good L3 performance in
a colocation or small-medium edge metro POP environment. What this means, is
that 3550 will support most features that can be handled in hardware in a fast
method, and 3550 will most likely not support features that require software
(slow-path CPU) work. One example would be DLSw? So its featureset is limited
by what the expensive and limited piece of hardware such as TCAM can support :)
Never tried 3750
myself yet, but 3550's seriously do move packets as long as you don't overload
the TCAM capacity with way too much acl's or too many routes beyond what is
supported. They are indeed solid line of switches for what they cost.
In general I believe Cisco is primarily looking for the following out of 3550
knowledge:
o Know the IOS. Can you comfortably run circles around with that 3550 being a
L3 switch? (routing protocols, general IOS routing commands) Have the clear
experience between OSI layers, specifically layer2 and layer3.
o SVI, ip routed port
o EtherChannel, both in L2 and L3/ip-routed mode
o 802.1q and vlan trunk configurations
o STP, spanning tree
o Universal layer2 switch add-on features such as SPAN
o QoS and basic rate limiting via MQC
This basically is probably what Cisco is all looking for. If you know IOS based
layer2 switching well, and can setup various layer2 tasks including vlans, etc
on other cisco switches, and also know the router IOS very well, then all it
requires is just some experience with the 3550 box to pull it altogether in a
L2+L3 box.
