Charles, on layer 2 only switches you can only have one active layer 3
virtual interface.
So if you put IP on any VLAN other than 1, VLAN 1 L3 must be shut down.
Remember though this is only from
a layer 3 perspective. VLAN 1 is still operational at layer 2.
On the 3550 you can have multiple SVI interfaces so VLAN 1 doesn't need to
be shut down.

recognized. I set an IP address on VLAN 20 of the 3500 which shuts vlan
1. Is there a problem with having vlan 1 shut. I remember something
