Ok, for all those who want an entertaining CCIE Lab story.....sorry guys,
this one is unrepeatable since it was taken in Halifax....a great town with
big hills which unfortunately no longer houses a CCIE lab.
So, in the way way back when the lab was 2 days........I set out for
Halifax, Nova Scotia in the middle of January. The snow is piled up along
the roads about 3 feet deep. I spend the first night in the hotel looking
through all my notes and other various resources.....wake up in the morning
feeling pretty confident, have breakfast in the hotel restaurant and set
out for the long climb up the hill to the Cisco office.
Day 1 starts off normally enough, eight of us get setup in the lab and
start working away furiously. I'm making my diagrams and diligently
updating all the protocols, IP address, etc....everything is going really
well up to the lunch break. Head outside for lunch and a light rain has
started (this becomes a significant factor later).....lunch consists of
Pizza, some plain...some with sausage, but the group wasn't really focused
on eating.
We get back to the lab and continue to work at a frantic pace......I
complete all my tasks about 1 hour early and spend the rest of the allotted
time checking, double checking, and triple checking.......all my
work. This is going great.
The walk back to the hotel.....as you recall, the hotel is at the bottom of
a very steep hill......in the middle of winter just after a huge snowstorm
blanketed the east coast. Adding to that, a light drizzle that had started
around lunchtime and continued throughout the day. Walking down the hill,
it has gotten quite slick from the cold and rain.....I take a step into one
of those ramps they build into sidewalks for easy access.....and my foot
slips. On a hill, those ramps can create a depression and hold about 1
foot of water.....so I fall flat on my back into a 1 ft deep puddle of
freezing water. Needless to say the rest of the walk back was not that
eventful.......getting back to the room, I have to carefully remove all the
stuff from my wallet and set it out to dry and change into dry clothes and
have dinner.
Ok, so I had a bad walk back, but the lab on day 1 went really well......I
completed all my tasks and couldn't think of a single thing that I
missed......except maybe that question on mobile arp.....or
multicast.....maybe I didn't configure OSPF properly......oh god, will I
get appletalk tomorrow.....this is the worst night ever (the newer guys
taking the 1 day lab miss all the fun of stressing overnight in between days)
So, after a nice drink and a few hours sleep I wake up ready to walk
through the door and hear how poorly I had done. My head feels kind of
funny and I can't quite think straight......geez...now I've got a bad head
cold....this is going to be a real winner today. Mike, the lab proctor
calls me in to let me know I did really well on day 1 and I get to continue
on day 2......he hands me my new workbook and we start for the day (about
half the group didn't get to continue)........at this point my cold has
gotten so bad that I can barely concentrate on any tasks.....I struggle
through the rest of the morning and we break for lunch.......Grading
occurred on day 2 at lunchtime also.....makes for a stressful lunch......
After lunch, Mike calls me in and looks disappointed.......his one
statement was "You didn't bring your A game today did you?"
So, I head back home having been defeated by the lab and the elements
again...........
I returned to Halifax 3 months later and at the end of day 2, Mike says to
me ..... "Your Kung Fu was exceptional, Congratulations ...... CCIE #6012"
Hope you enjoyed the story.........
