You should be able to use either. Just depends upon how you want to
treat access to the legacy voice mail system... E.g. track access and
authorization or not.

This link should walk you through setting up SMDI (which runs over the
serial cable anyhow - OOB).

What signalling protocol should I use on my connection gateway in order

to fully support my customer's legacy voice mail system (running on SMDI

protocol)? Should I use MGCP or SCCP? Is there anything that I need to
