wing lam,
PVST+ is the ability of the switch to support both the Common Spanning Tree
(CST) of basic 802.1Q and the PVST of Cisco's implementation of 802.1q, by
mapping information between the two types of Spanning Tree support. In
short, it is the ability to connect to PVST areas across a CST area by
tunneling the PVST bpdus. Cisco 802.1q will send a bpdu on the native vlan
to the standard, reserved bpdu address, that can be used by a non-cisco
switch running standard 802.1q on a Common Spanning Tree. In addition, the
Cisco switch will source a bpdu for each tagged vlan sent to a Cisco
reserved address. The non-Cisco switch will simply forward these tunneled
PVST bpdus through to the Cisco switches.
PVST+ allows us to have the same Per-Vlan Spanning-tree that we are used to
with ISL, but by using non-standard 802.1q in a way that allows
interoperaton with non-Cisco switches. PVST+ is a Cisco implementation of
802.1q.
