You're right about 1.

Regarding 2, there's not enough info to answer that question. As usual, it
depends on what the requirements are. In general, it's safer to hard code
what you want or need. So, if you want the etherchannel to always be a
trunk, use the command. You can also leave the ports at their default
setting and they will become an ISL trunk which is the default if it's
supported on both sides of the link.

I'm not positive what happens when you config 1 side with encap dot1q & you
leave it at the default setting of dynmaic desirable, but you can use the
show interface trunk to see what happens in that situation.
