Sorry Stuart... I know this works on router ethernet interfaces... guess
it doesn't work on switches. You could always make/use a hardware
loopback (pin 1 to 3 and pin 2 to 6).

Stuart,
The physical port you can keep up by disabling keepalives ('no
keepalive').
I doubt this will work for a VLAN interface though.
