Chris,

CSS 1100 or 11500, etc.. are external devices. Old
model, not original Cisco design equipment. Cisco
bought them - can't remember whom.

On the other hand, internal of 6500 devices content
module call CSM, is totally different w/ CSS on
configuration perspective, more complexity, more
tedious, more functionallity, and more feature, etc...
CSM is a nex generation of CSS.
