These are the channel-group modes available on 12.1.14 for the Cat 3550. At
least mine!! I am not sure of the IOS ver for the
Cat's in the lab, but I would assume it is somewhat recent.
Cat-3550#conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
Cat-3550(config)#int fa0/5
Cat-3550(config-if)#chan
Cat-3550(config-if)#channel-gro
Cat-3550(config-if)#channel-group 1 mode ?
active Enable LACP unconditionally
auto Enable PAgP only if a PAgP device is detected
desirable Enable PAgP unconditionally
on Enable Etherchannel only
passive Enable LACP only if a LACP device is detected
Cat-3550(config-if)#channel-group 1 mode

LACP is the standardized version and PagP is Cisco Etherchannel. I dunno
maybe PagP made it into a standards body too, but it hadn't the last time I
had to etherchannel (cisco term) an enterasys and a Cisco. Auto is the Cisco
PagP equiv of LACP passive and desirable is the LACP equiv of active.
On the 6500 with 12.2? maybe others... you can select which you want to use
using the
channel-protocol (LACP|PagP) command
The default is pagp.
