RE: Struggling with ATM

Well, I have tried to read them, however portions of them, in some cases
large portions, were beyond my knowledge of ATM and its underlying
structure.

Unfortunately the vast majority of my work is in FR or Pt2Pt networks, with
only a very little dabbling in ATM, hence my lack of comfort with its
implementation.

I wish I had more access to ATM configurations, but I don't think the wife
is gonna go for me purchasing an LS1010 and corresponding cards for my eq.
:)

With that said, I have been able to successfully configure and turn up ATM
interfaces, but in those situations they were very basic configs, with
subinterfaces and known vpi/vci pairs. I created the interfaces, assigned
IP's and VPI/VCI pairs and it worked. I never had to do any troubleshooting,
which for me has always been the best way to learn a new technology ( by
new, I mean new to me...)

I have started re-reading CCO doc's on ATM, and its configuration but once
again, its all theory, no actual hands on and troubleshooting.

Im considering renting some rack time with ATM eq so that I can practice,
but right now I would be just regurgitating configs, not actual configuring
from an understanding perspective which I don't think would help me much.

If you know of any doc's that you consider must reads for ATM, I would
gladly welcome them.

Larry

Have you read the two RFC's?

I'm hoping that someone can help clear things up for me.

I'm reviewing the ATM connectivity chapter (7) of the CCIE Practical
Studies: Security book.

I'm struggling to find the differences between RFC 2684:Multiprotocol encap
over AAL5 vs RFC 2225: Classical IP and ARP over ATM.

In an IP only world ( of which the security lab is one) I don't see any
difference in the configuration except for the inclusion of an inarp timeout
value in the latter. ( at least in the book )

I'm trying to decipher how they could phrase a question that would lead you
to choose one over the other.

Can someone point out the differences that I am obviously missing so I can
come up with a decision matrix?

I don't want answers to the CCIE lab, but rather what lead you to choose one
method over the other?

Right now the only thing I can think of is PVC autodiscovery, and the
inclusion/exclusion of an ATMARP server.

Thanks

Larry
