If You have a switch in between R6 and R1 then it might be a Spanning Tree issue:
when switch port facing R1 E0/0 has "PortFast" configured then receiving a BPDU on that
switch port (BPDU is coming from R1) causes a temporary outage due to STP converging. See

Try to disable STP on R1 (no bridge 1 protocol ieee) and see what happens.

There is a switch between R6 and R1, so this is not the problem. Also I have
tried applying the IP address directly over the Ethernet interface and there
is no prblem working in this way.
