I believe your question is wanting you to take a look at native vlan.

Subject: dot1Q
A simple question that confuses me: I am asked to configure trunking
between two 3550. I m also asked to "ensure that VLAN X is still forwarded
accross the link if the encapsulation fails". Does "encapsulation fails"
mean "stops trunking" ? Or something else ?
So I did configure "switchport access vlan X" but the solution shows
"switchport trunk native vlan X" !?!?
The doc-cd says about "switchport access vlan X" that if the link stops
trunking then it will only forward X.
Does anyone agree with me ?
By the way, this is CCBootcamp task 2-h lab3,
Regards
